Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve answered the most common questions I receive below, but please feel free to reach out if you have a question. I’m always available to chat.
Is yoga safe for breast cancer patients and women in recovery?
Yes – when it’s gentle and adapted. After treatment, your body needs support, not intensity. Always check with your consultant if you’re unsure.
Which yoga is best for breast cancer recovery?
Gentle or restorative yoga is usually the most supportive. The focus is calming the nervous system, not pushing strength or flexibility. This is the kind of yoga I offer at The Reclamation Space.
Is restorative yoga best for breast cancer recovery?
Often, yes. Restorative yoga uses fully supported postures to help shift the body out of survival mode and into a state of rest. In all my classes, I offer restorative poses throughout my sequence, while focusing on gentle movement.
Can I practice yoga while going through treatment?
Sometimes, with medical approval. During treatment, yoga should be very gentle: breath, light movement, and deep rest. Please let me know if you are still in treatment, and I’ll happily provide adaptations for you.
Where can I find yoga programmes focused on breast cancer recovery?
Specialist programmes are limited. I offer Women in Reclamation: a gentle, nervous-system-focused programme designed specifically for women after breast cancer treatment, available online and in person.
Where can I find gentle yoga classes for mastectomy patients near London?
I offer gentle in-person classes near St Albans, as well as online sessions across the UK. Look for teachers experienced in post-surgical recovery and trauma-aware practice.
What is the best online yoga platform for breast cancer survivors?
The most supportive platform is one designed specifically for recovery. General yoga libraries are not adapted for post-cancer bodies. A specialist, smaller, recovery-focused space is often more appropriate.
What are the recommended props for limited arm mobility after breast surgery?
If you join in person, I have all you need. If you are joining from home, you can use props from around your home – a blanket and two soft pillows will work well. Yoga bolsters and or exercise blocks are great, but not essential.
Where can I buy comfortable yoga wear after a mastectomy?
Start with a sports bra that feels truly comfortable on your body. Different brands suit different shapes, but many women find going up one band size (rather than cup size) helps, especially if there is swelling or sensitivity around the chest after surgery.
What if I have lymphoedema, cording, or chest tightness?
These are common after breast cancer treatment, and fully understood here at The Reclamation Space. Movements are gently adapted, options are always offered, and we work with your body, not against it.
Are your classes and programmes offered online or in person?
Both! All my classes and programmes are offered online. I also offer in-person sessions and run my Women in Reclamation Programme in St Albans, Hertfordshire, UK, with plans to offer them in other London locations in the future.
How much yoga experience do I need to have to attend?
Reclamation Yoga is inclusive of all yoga levels, from beginner to advanced. However, if you have a lot of experience and are expecting a very physical practice, this is not for you!
What do I wear to your yoga classes and programmes?
Comfortable clothes that don’t restrict movement.
Do I need to inform you about injuries, special requirements, or health conditions?
You’ll complete a health check form and waiver before we start, where you can disclose anything necessary.
Are online sessions suitable during recovery from illness or treatment?
If your doctor gives you the go-ahead, and you let me know how you are feeling that day, we can practice together and make accommodations where needed.
I’m not very tech-savvy, will I manage?
Yes, I will send a link you can click, and I can guide you through positioning your computer or phone camera.
Are the sessions live or pre-recorded?
Sessions are live.
Will I be visible to other participants, and do I need my camera on?
Preferably, yes, so I can see you, but if that worries you, we can chat it through and see what accommodations we can make.
Do I need to buy a special mat or props?
If you are practicing from home/online, you just need an exercise mat, a soft blanket, and a soft pillow. If you do own yoga or exercise blocks, they can be helpful, but they are not essential.
How many people are in each online session?
There is a maximum of ten women in the class/programme. I purposefully keep my groups small, so the level of personal attention is not compromised, and each participant has space to settle and feel supported.
Can I join from outside the UK?
Absolutely. You’re very welcome to join from anywhere in the world. I’m also happy to discuss rates that feel appropriate for the country you’re joining from.
Where do you offer yoga in St Albans, Hertfordshire, UK?
St Mary’s Old Schoolroom, Childwick Green. It’s about 3 minutes from St Albans towards Harpenden (AL3 6JJ), and 7 minutes from Harpenden. I chose it because it’s a convenient countryside escape close to these two towns.
What is the yoga space like?
The space is in St Mary’s Old Schoolroom, a picturesque, small building that was originally a Victorian schoolhouse. It’s full of charm, very quiet, and private. When it’s not raining, you can hear the birds chirping outside.
There’s a lovely hedged garden next to the schoolhouse for when we have great summer weather; it has benches and trees and is a beautiful spot for yoga.
Are there mirrors in the space?
No, there are no mirrors.
Do I need to bring anything?
No, I provide mats and everything you’ll need.
How many people are in the class/programme?
There is a maximum of ten women in the class/programme. I purposefully keep my groups small, so the level of personal attention is not compromised, and each participant has space to settle and feel supported.
What is your cancellation policy?
Because these programmes are intentionally small and supportive, each place is reserved especially for you. For that reason, bookings are non-refundable.
If you need to cancel more than 14 days before the programme begins, I’m happy to offer a transfer to a future date (subject to availability). Unfortunately, cancellations within 14 days of the start date cannot be transferred or refunded.
Can I transfer to another date if I can’t attend?
If something unexpected comes up, you may transfer to a future programme with at least 14 days’ notice. Transfers are subject to availability and limited to one per booking.
Once the programme has started, missed sessions can’t be transferred or refunded, but I will always do my best to support you in staying connected to the process.
Do you offer payment plans for programmes?
Yes, payment plans are available. The full balance simply needs to be completed before the programme begins. Please note that payment plans follow the same cancellation terms.
